And material tech keeps advancing, so on-Earth practicality gets ever closer. OTOH, an elevator or something similar is a capital-intensive hero project; huge front-end costs.
The problem with Earth is that the very best theoretical materials are marginal for an Earth elevator.
Engineering is the art of making what you want from what you can get at a profit.
