What do libertarians have to say about this?
Quite true. What we have is a communist people. The politicians are just a reflection of that.Skipjack wrote:Dont make this an issue about Obama allone. All but 6(!) republican and democrat senators voted for this bill!
And it is not just the here and now. The collective good has always been the way politics works. Individuals get crushed. Even Jefferson at the end of his life was lamenting the loss of liberty and even more so the Spirit of Liberty.
So let me leave you with some Jefferson. Take it to heart:
I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than those attending too small a degree of it. - Thomas Jefferson
Or this old Latin one:
“Malo periculosam libertatem quam quietum servitium” - “I prefer liberty with danger to peace with slavery”

People generally were afraid of some people becoming slaves to drugs.
In exchange for their fear we are all becoming slaves to the state. Way cool.
If you want to look up how bad it has become check out asset forfeiture.
The Drug War: its not just for dopers any more.
The irony of all you drug warriors complaining about the results on ordinary folks cracks me up. The J man had a point: "What you do to the least....." and you all thought he was being metaphorical or talking about the great by n by. Nope. Here and now.
Greatest show on earth. And the root of all evil? The desire to do good - on someone else.
American money used to have printed on it: mind your business. The next redesign should have on it: "Mind your own business".

A friend of mine just ran into this the other day. He deposited $5,000 in his account to cover some checks he was writing. The bank so far has not accepted his transfer as legal. Fighting money laundering don't you know. This excellent video produced by NewsChannel 5 in Tennessee shows how police use "civil asset forfeiture" laws to steal money from motorists:

Wife Arrest him!
More For what?
Wife He's dangerous!
Roper For all we know he's a spy!
Daughter Father, that man's bad!
More There's no law against that!
Roper There is, God's law!
More Then let God arrest him!
Wife While you talk he's gone!
More And go he should, if he were the Devil himself, until he broke the law!
Roper So, now you give the Devil the benefit of law!
More Yes! What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil?
Roper Yes, I'd cut down every law in England to do that!
More Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned 'round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat?
This country is planted thick with laws, from coast to coast, Man's laws, not God's! And if you cut them down (and you're just the man to do it!), do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then?
Yes, I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake!

It seems the Roper's have won this round. Much to their discomfort.
