Think Of It As Evolution In Action
Idiot.
George Will suggested that the real issue in Wisconsin is that the state no longer wants to automatically collect union dues for the unions. The want the unions to collect for themselves. The unions oppose this, as it makes the union member have more ownership over the fees. He contends that historically, unions that direct collect inevitably decline in membership as members more often than not self evaluate that the dues paid do not equate to value gained. He cited some figures related to private sector union declines over the last few decades.
I personally experienced this years ago when I moonlighted at UPS for beer money during college. I was mandated to join the union, as a condition of taking the job. The company automatically deducted dues from my pay. I did not get any money from my paycheck for the first three checks, it all went to the union. I can say that they really did nothing for me in the time I worked at UPS, other than being an annoying auto-deduct from my pay (once I finally got net money from my check). Given a choice, I would have opted out of the union in heart beat.

This article may shed some further light on the subject. It contains information which I DID NOT KNOW, and it is likely that others didn't know it either.

Would someone please note that Unions make the great lion’s share of their $ from negotiating “benefits”, not salaries… or collection of dues.
