VDH paints a pretty dismal picture:

Such populations, with a lot of illegal immigrants, will have to be Americanized and inspired to bootstrap themselves up, rather than being content to live in squalor.

Either that or a fair number of those born in the U.S. will have to return to the land and rebuild. You can't have just urban areas surrounded by anarchy.

So you are going through the steps.

First step:
Denial, a miracle will happen and everything will be good. Check

Second step:
Hatred. Lets ridicule the facts and the messenger. I am sure you can show me a bit of anger too, right?
Yeah. I'm in denial and angry at the messenger for sure.

you can't simply expect children to teach themselves everything they need to know
Really? I pretty much taught myself electronics from age 10 to 13. So much so that by 14 I was working in the field (summer job in TV repair).

And further on I trained myself well enough to become an aerospace engineer.

If the resources are available (see a post above) teaching yourself a subject is not very hard - if you are interested enough. If you are not interested the teaching is a waste anyway.

Let me add that my mother taught me to read by age 4 or so. We did the same for our kids.

And yes things are very bad. That is why correctives have appeared.

I am glad that in Austria, children still get a very good overall education, not just on the subjects they are interested in.
I have to admit though that our education has been deterriorating too. Our socialists be thanked here. Their mantra is that "everybody is the same". They could not make the idiots smarter, so they had to make the smart ones dumber. So "everybody is the same".
