I dont quite get why the noone really gets what my real issue was with all this. I was not just nitpicking at his pronunciation (I and could swear that his should be pronounciation). I was critizising the fact, that he clearly was making uninformed statements.
The fact that they were uninformed were shown- among other things- by this particular issue. As I said, had he bothered talking to someone who is familiar with planetaria, he might have been told that the right way to say it is "planetaria".

Who cares how he says it. The real issue is that his facts are wrong. Not that he can't have some hollywood grade acting or enunciation. There are at least half a dozen instances of bad/terrible grammar errors in this thread. Yet barely a few were pointed out. Why? Because that's not the point. They're only worth concern once the more important things are dealt with.

You could probably make a case for Feynman's NY accent being PITA. "Why can't he speak normally?" Who cares? Only once it's truly doubtful that it's symptomatic of something serious, e.g. genuine systematic neglect for pertinent elements of his arguments, does it matter.

Yes and not only that. They were wrong because he was not well informed. Not well informed about a topic that he had made an important point in his campaign.

You know, I paid a lot of attention to the campaign and before this thread I had never heard that John Mccain made major part of his campaign, Planetarium spending. Though his calling earmarks "foolish" is an important point and the Obama has risen foolishness to new heights.

You know, for somebody who insists that everyone else be more informed about things, you are illinformed yourself. You might want to fact check yourself before repeating the ravings of a lunatic:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prescott_Bush

Especially when you might just run into somebody who grew up in Greenwich CT, and has heard the lie about Prescott Bush so many times that he knows how to look up the truth. After all it's one of your important points.

And how are youtube clips of a local TV news program relevant to anything. Yes they are silly. But since you live in Austria you would not know that local news programs are often filled with silly things.

I've recently heard of breakthroughs on Adult stem cell research in Japan and France. If I am missing news about breakthroughs in the area of Embryonic stem cell research, it might be due to the fact that the websites I frequent probably are posting about Adult Stem cell research, and might not be covering any information on Embryonic stem cell research.

Due to the variety and due to the massive scope of the news covered by these websites, I find it unlikely that I am missing developments. It is NOT one of my pet issues, so it's possible I just haven't been paying enough attention.
You are missing developments. Of course you are. You're reading the news.

I can't fault you for not being a scientist, but honestly, do you really think the news is all there is? If you read the primary literature, you'd see new developments monthly.

But to give you some basic news, human embryonic stem cell treatments for acute spinal injury have been approved for clinical trials, due to start within a matter of months. Few of us will know more than that for the next few years, as corporations are tightlipped about these things. But compared to adult stem cell treatments, I call that a win. No adult stem cell treatment is anywhere near to restoring movement in the paralyzed.

Well, we're average joes. None of us are campaigning to run the country, with a team of fact checkers and speech writers behind every post. That's why.

I think you have been overtaken by the French disease. Americans by and large are not too fussy. The question is: is communication taking place. If it is mistaking "to" for "too" from time to time is tolerable.
I just ask for a little consistency. If something is worth doing, it's worth doing right - at least when it comes to our role models and leaders, who should be held up to a higher standard. If you don't want to differentiate between "to" and "too", then by all means make it official and throw out the distinction. None of this half-assery.
Well OK. Consistency. He is an American and does the word the American way. I can see why you are sceptical. But in America we harken back to the original Greek and are therefor skeptics. I mean heck. Don't you Brits even know where your words come from?
I am a little confused. Do you think I'm British, or are you metaphorically calling me a Redcoat?

I don't think you can pin definite negligence of essentials of something like planetaria to how someone pronounces it. It's semantics over substance. Throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Maybe McCain is stubborn and is too busy crunching the important facts to give a darn about how you pronounce something. If it were that he was so negligent that he said something like 'fusion reactors always blow up' so often that this kinda misstep did in fact become perfectly synonymous with his neglect of actual brass tacks stuff (as Bush seemed to.. and pretty much explicitely admitted himself), like what planetaria do and why they ought to be shut down or saved or whatever, then you'd have a sensible point.

Anyway, this isn't worth arguing over. It's off topic anyway. I've made my point and you understood it; agree or not.

More bad news about the economy:
http://alfin2100.blogspot.com/2009/12/u ... nt-be.html

http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/200 ... ber_5.html

If Obama keeps going he will have employment back to 1939 levels in no time:

Tax cuts raise revenue:
http://www.heritage.org/Research/Featur ... fault.aspx
I don't think it could be any more clear unless you are a progressive and believe in somehow all things MUST be equal that Obama's course is heading for disaster.

Stupid way of arguing.
Mengele and the Nazis are long dead, there is no point in digging them out over and over again.
Besides, whenever the word Nazi falls somewhere, I get sick to the stomack and my ears get a weird sound in them all of a sudden and I cant follow the conversation anymore.

I am NOT in favor of abortion. My personal opinion is that if you made, you take care of it!
BUT, there are situations where abortions are perfectly justifyable even to my morals.
E.g. in case of rape and incest. I also see them justified if there is a medical implication for it, e.g. the life of the mother is in danger. I also see it quite justifyable if the baby would be handicaped, e.g. mentally. Yeah look down on me for that, but I would rather spend my money on two healthy kids than on one healthy and one unhealthy kid.
Sorry, if that does not match your christian morale, or sense of political correctness, but I dont give a frack about either such.
Those who don't study history are doomed to repeat it.

All you have to do is look at the kind of people Obama surround himself with and what they want:

http://www.firstthings.com/blogs/second ... -life-yes/
It's also important to note what Obama is NOT doing:

Planetarium logic:
http://cafehayek.com/2008/07/bastiatian-wisd.html
You want to use my money to build your planetarium. That's what Obama does. The problem is that there are other things that won't be done, businesses that won't be started, products that won't be made because of Obama's planetarium. And we will be paying for it for a long time. that is why a planetarium is foolish.

Great article on what needs to be done:

Not that Obama will do any of this. He owes too many and understands too little.

Careful here.
First, most of the atheists like me are for strict secularismn. Most of the Christian right in the US are against it, weanting to force bullcrap like "Intelligent Design" to be tought at schools.

Further, I am with you here. Islam is a problem, a problem that will spread and that must not be underestimated. However, I do think we have different opinions on the means to fight it with.
You e.g. are trying to fight it with denouncing the very people that are about to fall victim first. The germans. Within the next two generations they will be gone, over, out, bye. They have fallen victim to the WW2- winner- prescribed mental self castration. As I posted before, there are schools in Germany where up to 90% of the students dont speak german anymore. They are either Turks or Arabs.
The only thing that makes me happy about it is that it will backfire at those that prescribed the German people to commit this mental self castration. It is already starting. When Turks are rioting in the German streets, then the German jews are forced (by turkish- heritage German police forces) to take down their flags. Jews are getting singled out again in Germany, not by the Germans, they are powerless by now, by the Turks. When German German police forces have to go make a single arrest in a Turkish quarter. they have to come with 20, 30 cars, because they will emmediately be surrounded by just as many turks. A single car is without chance and has to leave the field to the Turkish mob. Such is Germany these days!
It will only get worse. Germany is still sitting on a few thousand US nukes and the fools from the US are lobbying for Turkey to join the EU. You guys are so clueless it is hillarious!

I agree with most of what you say here. My point is that it is impossible to stop religious fanaticism with secularism. They won't listen. They won't respect secular traditions and customs.

The choice between Religion and secularism is a false choice. The choice of secularism won't be allowed by the Muslims, and it is trying to make itself the enemy of the Christians.

You won't be able to sit out the eventual confrontation. A lot of people think it's too late for Europe, and within 50 years, Europe will be a fully Islamic continent.

Too much of an open mind (Tolerance, etc.) makes one's brains fall out. :)

And yes, the United States does incredibly stupid things, especially when brilliant geniuses (Woodrow Wilson, John Kennedy, Robert Macnemara, Jimmy Carter) are running it.

Turkey has been lost, and the leaders today are fools if they don't see it. .

Edit: The Meme of Islam is evolutionarily superior to the Meme of secularism. In a contest for the survival of the fittest, i'm betting on Islam Meme winning the contest.
It's hard to beat a meme where it's holders are willing to blow themselves up for Allah. Unless we convince them that we will blow ALL of them up for Allah. That was the Mongol solution to the Allah problem as my good Polish friend Art puts it.
