As long as the liquids pumped are not very toxic or expensive it might work.

Gasoline is pretty toxic and dangerous. I'd settle for a safe means of handling them, not extremely toxic, and economically and safely recycled (recharged).

Other than fuel cells, most batteries I'm familar with react the electrolyte with the electrodes, so you would also have to replace at least one electrode. I keep waiting for a practical fuel cell that effectively utilizes an entire fuel molecule (methane or other hydrocarbon for example) in the reaction, instead of utilizing just the hydrogen.
