And I've heard (though it may not be reliable) that those diamond cartels were very upset that artificial diamonds were getting to be of such good quality now.

It is also only true for some real diamonds. There are a number of mining companies refusing to participate in the cartel, who generally get smeared by the cartel as being part of the "blood diamonds" market (i.e. diamonds mined in countries under despots or guerilla/terrorist groups).
For all the claims by the de Beers cartel about 'blood diamonds', the labor conditions for most employees of the cartel companies are nearly as appalling.
