So eventually civilian police tracking and monitoring tech will get just as good, same with civilian UAV's and then both sides will hate it equally, and both sides will agree to stop it.

I know a former NSA guy who only uses old cell phones and prefers old cars. I figure he knows something.

I guess with an old phone the most they could do is get your location. Versus getting emails, texts,etc

Old style cell phones are cheaper and usually have cheaper plans, but after getting used to driving in a car equipped with airbags I don't feel comfortable drivng in one that just has seatbelts, chipped or not.

If you use the seat belts religiously they provide 95% of the protection of airbags + seat belts.

And of course if you are not wearing the seat belts to keep you in position in a crash airbags are not near as much help as touted.

So how much safety would you give up to be free of surveillance?

In terms of just safety, you should probably give up the fancier cell phones anyway. I nearly got in a wreck once just because the ringer went off and I glanced over at the phone. Didn't even need to be checking my friends status on facebook.

I've walked away from a low speed head on, so it's more accident phobia than police state paranoia at work. The more annoying thing about microchipped new cars is the PPP toll(troll) bridges that will use them, even if people put a polarized filter over the license plate to beat the camera. I avoid using those bridges on principle, but if the surveillance state wants to read over my shoulder, let'm, they'll turn on their masters if they do.
