This goes with my theory of population centers of more than 250,000 are becoming uncontrollable.

I am not a nuclear physicist, but play one on the internet.

But Oakland is not even as dangerous as Flint, Mi right now... We just hear more of it, since it is in Cali and Cali is an attention whore.

My brother got killed in Oakland in 1974.
BTW where I live is in the top 10 of the most dangerous places in the US. Lucky for me I live on the East side.

I live a few miles north of Detroit... Most paradoxically this is also one of the 10 richest counties in the US. There are the million USD mansions everywhere around me. But just north of here is Pontiac which is a ghost town without a police department and a few more miles north- north west of that is Flint...
Michigan is probably the most depressing part of the US to live in.

paperburn1: There are cities significantly larger who do better jobs of maintaining the peace. I don't think you can set a number and say it magically becomes unstable. Oakland is a town that acts as the low-income work force of the surrounding larger SF and San Jose regions.
MSimon: Anecdotal evidence is anecdotal. My grandmother was murdered in Dallas and with the killer "caught," justice was not served as they let him go, not because he didn't confess to killing her, but that he had 3 different stories and it was cheaper to let him go.
Skipjack: I don't find this paradoxical at all. I think it's well documented and there is a term for this effect called white flight. More specifically you witness the result of affluent white flight.
