Given how elusive ordinary neutrinos are, a 'sterile' variety will be really difficult to pin down...

Also, there must be a LOT of them about...

Thus the comment that they may make up a substantial portion of the dark matter in the Universe. I think, the typical neutrinos were considered as a source of ~ 5 % of the dark matter (at most). This new flavor may change this picture.
