So essentially what Realtor Fusion and UWM is doing (and they already have a first plasma with HTSCs).

3 million euro of EU-funding allocated to something called the TauEB project.

The sum is shared between KTH Royal Institute of Technology, KIPT (Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology), UKAEA, and KIC INNOENERGY SE.

Key Innovation: The project introduces a first-of-its-kind integration of three physical confinement techniques:

· Magnetic Confinement: Through the Novatron’s unique magnetic mirror design.

· Ambipolar Plugging: An electrostatic plugging at the magnetic mirrors, achieved by creating an electric potential within the plasma.

· Ponderomotive Confinement: Confinement of the plasma by an external electric RF-field, using the ponderomotive force.

I thought Toks were more in the 5% or lower- range. Still high beta is good, if they can make it work.

There has been some coverage of this project in national swedish media recently. Some details have been presented in a radio interview. It is in swedish so there is no use posting a link.

Anyway: They aim for a variety of sizes with the smaller ones using HTS magnets and D-T fuel cycle. The largest ones are projected at 5 GW thermal power with resistive magnets and D-D fuel.

From what I have seen they initially want to use D-T and large traditional copper magnets. D-D is much harder than D-T, but with HTS magnets they might be able to run in a mode where the tritium from half of the D-D reactions is immediately used for the D-T reaction, assuming their confinement time and beta are good enough. In this way they could breed tritium on the fly and avoid tritium breeding through lithium blankets.
