Yeah they are getting both cheaper and more sophisticated at the same time. I have been eyeing them for a while. There are even free open source projects for those. Their quality is still not so great though.
How about a fast food restaurant serving powdered eggs and turkey bacon? No short order cook so it's cheap, and the food is bound to be just as good as the original. Print it with the plate and get rid of the dish washer, too.
With laser sintering you can get some pretty dense parts. I sent Famulus some info on a place not far from here that does it.

I am sorry, if I was not clearer, I meant the cheap, open source ones are not producing that great quality parts. They are too low resolution for my taste at least. Might still be useful to some though.
