This is one of Bloomberg's group and this pretty much paints him as a moron too.

Clearly no one familiar with firearm operation was consulted on that image. Or if they were they want the group to be embarrassed.

To them (gun control advocates) ignorance of firearms beyond the most basic level (if that) is a virtue, not a fault. If you actually know something about guns, then you must be some kind of "gun nut", with some kind of gun loving fetish or something.

The whole "end gun violence" = "take everyone's guns away" is the really stupid part. Laws don't take guns away from criminals and we have all the data of what happens when you take guns away from the people. Just look how gun crime and home invasion have skyrocketed in Australia.

Hey that is just a shotgun, firing a shell with those 5.56 "whole bullet/cartridge" loads. Didn't you know?

LOL, this add is really stupid. I am all for people having guns for self defense. In Austria I have been against stricter gun laws. But I do have to wonder whether assault weapons and heavy artillery are really necessary things to have for a private person. But then you guys don't have a Bundesheer. So you have to be in constant fear of your own military.

Saw a report on the Ukraine crisis that said the Russians have new body armor that can stop a 5.56, and their new rifles fire a 5.45 round that can penetrate western body armor. As an interim maybe they should replace all 5.56 rifles in NATO with .50 caliber rifles. Heavier, can't carry as much ammo, lower rate of fire, but wouldn't have to fire very many rounds to do the same job.

I doubt the Russian ammo can penetrate the new ceramic armor. If it can that would be very surprising and make that VERY expensive stuff pretty worthless.

.50 cal ammo is not just way too heavy, but the guns are way too expensive and useless at shorter ranges. The weapon is just too long, too heavy, not easily/quickly pointed. I think the Barrett weighs something like 15 lbs sans scope and the ammo is on top of that. It is after all, and anti-aircraft round.

But whatever the new Russian armor, I'm sure a useful round can be developed. Just takes time and money, as always. There is a LOT of room between the little 5mm rounds used in assault rifles and a .50 cal. Probably none of the new armor can withstand a hit from an M1 Garand (30-06) with modern ammo.

Well, lets break out the M1 again. What a great rifle. No wonder the Allies won.
I'd love to own some nice rifles but I live in NY state, unfortunately. Got a trusty shotgun; no doubt they'll want that soon enough too.

I would be surprised if the majority of he Russian troops are equipped with that new armor. It is probably only a few of them that are.

Honestly, advances in ceramic armor are so rapid that even the stuff that gets published is outdated by the time it hits the shelves. Plasma sintering is a cheap process since it's so fast, but the stuff that comes out is still sold for fantastical markup, and the trade secrets here rule. I'm sure no one has better armor than the US Army. The question is just as you note--how much of it has been fielded?

Rumor has it that the last gen of ceramic armor has already been wed with power assist to make a man able to run with a minigun and be fairly invulnerable to small arms fire, though I've no idea if that's true. If it is you can be sure it won't appear on the web.

Clearly time to get that auto smoothbore firing triples of range gated shaped charges done then...

US body armor with augments in place is rated for vital protection for up to 7.62.

US/NATO 5.56 M855 Greentip is VERY hard to stop with body armor. Greentip is pretty standard combat issue these days.

You tube 1/4 inch steel plate demo

Youtube 5.56 v. chevy water pump

Youtube 5.56 greentip v. 3/8 armor plate

I have shot thousands of rounds of this ammo, and it is really good stuff.
More often than not I used M995 which is a Tungsten penetrator and considered AP, where the M855 is not. M995 punches really well. However, that said it is not so useful IMO on full up soft targets, as it tends to laser on through vice fragment/explode.

The new issue ammo is M855A1, which I have not used, but by all accounts is a nice half way between the M855 and M995:

M855A1

This is the newer AK-74 5.45 ammo in action against body armor:
5.45 AK-74 v. body armor

The true difference between 5.56 and 7.62 is the weight per round. You can load up on 5.56 and carry it around, the equivilent weight of 7.62 is significantly less rounds.

Per round weight (from wikipedia):
M14 7.62×51mm 393 gr (25.4 g)
M16 5.56×45mm 183 gr (11.8 g)
AK-47 7.62×39mm 281 gr (18.2 g)

I used to carry in my normal extended ops rig 20x30rd mags plus hump some 7.62 linked for the heavy.
I could not imagine carrying 14x30rd mags of 7.62 in addition to the linked.
Simple math:
18.2g x 600 = 10,920 grams or 10.920Kg which is 24 lbs of rounds, plus the weight of the 20 mags (and 7.62 mags are heavy)
verses
11.8g x 600 = 7,080 grams or 7.080Kg which is 15.6lbs, housed in much lighter mags.

Every pound you carry counts.

Been done for over a year. Don't need triples.
