Jews --> Christians --> Protestants

The Jews developed a set of rules. When the rules no longer matched the environment Jesus came along. His church then developed a set of rules. When those rules no longer matched the environment the Protestants arose.

We have come to another major rule changing era.

It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

that sounds a bit simplistic, doesn´t it?

it´s more like an evolutionary tree branching... new religions appear all the time, many die soon, some take a long time to die, etc. It´s not like catholicism died with the protestants... if anything, catholic religion even grew larger in the new world, Africa, etc. All the while you also have islam, which appeared BEFORE protestans, and its "related", but not an offspring of christianism, but another abrahamic religion. And it divided into Shia and Sunni just a few years after its birth (not long after Mohammed died)

Also, christianity evolved along time. The catholic church that existed when Protestants appeared was not the same as in the Roman time... actually, we may even consider protestants appeared not when the rules no longer matched, but exactly to RESTORE some older rules of christianism, not forgetting it had ALREADY split before that, between western Rome church and the Eastern Orthodox church...

Yeah. It is simplistic. I was trying to look at the big picture. The Jews had a top down culture. Catholics redeveloped that. Protestants developed a distributed culture. Except the differences between the sects are no longer of much interest. Let you conscience be your guide seems to be coming back. To the horror of our 20th and 7th Century brothers.
