The Jews developed a set of rules. When the rules no longer matched the environment Jesus came along. His church then developed a set of rules. When those rules no longer matched the environment the Protestants arose.

We have come to another major rule changing era.

it´s more like an evolutionary tree branching... new religions appear all the time, many die soon, some take a long time to die, etc. It´s not like catholicism died with the protestants... if anything, catholic religion even grew larger in the new world, Africa, etc. All the while you also have islam, which appeared BEFORE protestans, and its "related", but not an offspring of christianism, but another abrahamic religion. And it divided into Shia and Sunni just a few years after its birth (not long after Mohammed died)

Also, christianity evolved along time. Yeah. It is simplistic. I was trying to look at the big picture. The Jews had a top down culture. Catholics redeveloped that. Protestants developed a distributed culture.
