And if you go to Tokyo you must go to the Ginza. There is noplace like it in the world. You can feel the tech boiling just under the street.
Do not drive or take a bus. Take the underground and walk. It's essential. If you can possibly arrange it in the spring. Eat from the little carts, not from restaurants; the best restaurants are not in the Ginza. They're simply there for fuel if you need it. The carts are as good as the restaurants, and more fun; like having a hot dog off a cart when touristing in New York. Yakitori is fairly non-threatening if you're afraid of raw fish; it's grilled chicken and veggies on a bamboo stick, finger food. I of course feast; then again I know what everything is.
It's like what US shopping malls are a cheap imitation of.

And one time, get invited to a May Day celebration in the small town birthplace of a German co-worker.
That's my kind of a good time. All the snausages you can eat and all the beer you can drink. Arrange for a driver to take you home and tip him well. You will be thrashed, but you will be happy.

But my favorite city ever was Hamburg. The Reeperbahn was amusing; I wasn't in the market, being married, but it wasn't like I couldn't look. And the truth is the best food in the city is the Warsteiner Elbspeicher by the Northern Elbe. You can pick your cut off the roasting calf just beyond the entryway. It can be a bit rowdy with the merchant seamen but it's all good; they've been doing this for thousands of years, and they almost never fight, and if they do they keep it to themselves. Of course if you want fancy French or Italian food then you'll spurn my judgment; but I wanted traditional food, and that place has been there doing that for thousands of years. If you're OK with veal cutlets, or snausages, and you like some kraut and spetzle with cheese sauce, you'll be fine. And of course all served with Warsteiner Pils fresh from the tap, if you haven't got enough people to get a five-gallon keg. While we were there the merchant marine at the next table got another keg.

I sang shantys with them; I have a good ear, and even if I didn't they were drunk enough to be happy. Good times. And that's merely the tip of the iceberg. I went there lots of times. If I was gonna move to someplace other than the US it would be Hamburg.
And my second favorite is Monterey. That's why I live here.
Third favorite is London. I wish I'd seen more. The Tower of London was irresistible, despite Buckingham Palace being temporarily open (it was after the fire).
Fourth favorite is Edinburgh. I had a true pub crawl, with a local.

The city I hate most is Paris. The Parisians are the most stuck up chickensxxt people on the face of the Earth. They're the only ones worse than the Pakistanis. Next in line is Boston. All three are intolerable.
Some people might pick on Shanghai and Taipei. However, although the traffic is murderous, it's not hateful; that's just the way they drive. Once you understand the rules they're very careful and ethical, the way they see it. Not like a roundabout in Paris. Those guys are out for blood and if you're not fearless they'll work you.
