The mandarins have created welfare states impossible to change and without hope.

The more you research what's happening the more you come to realize that it's not stupidity, it's deliberate. Even children understand the policies don't make any sense, the people who create those policies are too educated to screw up unintentionally. They operate on the prinicple that you have to break a few eggs to create an omlette, only it's everybody elses scrambled eggs. I saw it in Canada under Trudeau with the creation of the Gross National Debt, in Britian the NHS is being deliberately mismanaged into the ground in order to bring in privatization. Obamacare is designed to drive costs through the roof. Politicians love public private partnerships, they can hide the graft and reward there supporters, all the while asset stripping the public.

Actually, no. The EU is at max-taxation, but the US can ramp up it taxation levels for decades to come.

In theory. In reality, not so much. Europe has a history of dominance by an Aristocracy, so they are somewhat used to being downtrodden. Americans are less tolerant of it. We are already working to go Galt. Note the numbers of companies moving out of California and other Liberal locations.

Glen Reynolds (and myself) refer to this as credentialism. It too is suffering from a bubble which appears ready to pop. You can only tamper with reality so much.

I refer to it as credentialism as well, and Walter Russell Mead has also done extensive analysis on the Higher Ed Bubble. The bubble is going to cause problems for the lower-level credentialed drudges - teachers, social workers, direct-care therapists, government employees, etc. The State School alums. But the Ivy League feeders to the actual Mandarinate should do just fine.

So who will the next leader of the "Free World" be?

Won't happen. I'd like to believe in the self-starting Minuteman tradition of citizenship in America as well, but the past is a different country. We've walked too far down the road of the modern dole. Wickard vs Filburn remains the law of the land 71 years after it was issued. The informal institutions of civil society that enabled citizenship as a working concept have been thoroughly undermined and replaced by government agencies - Gleichschaltung was merely much more gradual here in the States. Even if/when modern-day Populares defeat the modern-day Optimates, the Populare leadership will merely co-opt and copy the Optimate regime ASAP. As to what that regime will look like - America is shaping up as a fusion of Imperial China and Imperial Rome, IMO. There've been definite Middle Kingdom overtones to America back to the beginning.

Best case for keeping citizenship ideals alive is to leave. Hope Woodward or related work out.

I'm still operating under the financial collapse/ Social collapse theory. Given the Financial mess, of which the public has very little inkling, a second Depression is almost inevitable. I have long believed that if a second depression hits, Modern America will not weather it the way it did in the 1930s. I think the dysfunctional people of modern America will end up dying by the millions.



It is my hope that hardship will lead to a restoration of common sense, and a subsequent pursuit of those deemed responsible. I aim to be among those shouting loudly for the heads of those Ivy Leaguers to whom we were referring. Especially any working in the propaganda field.

Also, I will point out that Wickard v Filburn occurred as a result of Roosevelt appointed Judges. Another example of where the future is badly influenced by decisions of the past.

More probable is if the aforementioned financial collapse happens, causing widespread unrest leading to the establishement of some kind of martial law. This would as a matter of course lead to an authoritarian quasi-democracy with lots of people either in government made busy work or flat out on the dole. Suppresion of civil liberties, the Constitution, draconian gun control etc. inevitably following. Scared old people worried about their medicare drying up & frightened by images on their TV's of rampaging inner city youth would go along with most of that.

I have not neglected to contemplate that in my scenario. I had always assumed that when the riots occurred in the cities, the Government would attempt to initiate martial law, then wage and price controls, followed by attempts to nationalize the food producing farms.

I have no doubt the government will care more for the rioters than the farmers, (numbers) but depending on when this occurs, I expect it to produce a severe backlash that will not be controllable by the statist forces.

They are going to attempt to do what Stalin did in the Ukraine, but with one important difference. We Americans are not accustomed to putting up with that sort of crap, and they cannot get our guns away from us.
