Yes, I would say that is a distinctly French problem. English is a slut. She sleeps with every other language.

The only experience I've had in that regard came as a 10 year old in 1968. My brother, who was 12 at the time, was sent across the country from B.C. to Quebec on an Educanada exchange program for two weeks. The only thing us kids new about Quebec at that point was the major cities and where to find the province on a map of the country, plus a little thrown in about the economy and early history, nothing about language or politics.

I'll never forget the first thing he said when he came home, he gave me a very sad look and said, "the French are conceited, they have a puffed up image of themselves." Still, we were taken completely by suprise when the FLQ October crisis hit a year later, having been raised on patriotic boyscout propaganda.
