The number of Americans who do not identify with any religion continues to grow at a rapid pace. One-fifth of the U.S. public – and a third of adults under 30 – are religiously unaffiliated today, the highest percentages ever in Pew Research Center polling.

In the last five years alone, the unaffiliated have increased from just over 15% to just under 20% of all U.S. adults. Their ranks now include more than 13 million self-described atheists and agnostics (nearly 6% of the U.S. public), as well as nearly 33 million people who say they have no particular religious affiliation (14%).3

About 1/2 the youth have tried pot. You can't scare them with refer madness any more (nice try though). In fact refer madness is now counter productive. Keep it up.

Well anyway - what do you think this falling away from organized religion (authoritarianism) will do to the culture? Will the youth be wanting more liberty? Or a different set of authoritarians?

Very few of Obama’s young supporters from 2008 are likely defect to Romney. Some may not vote, and I see the possibility of others abandoning both parties and instead choosing the Libertarian candidate.

Me? Since Republicans don't want my vote (told to me many times, many places, many voices - including several here - I even got a thread telling me to go away) I'm voting for the most libertarian candidate in every race. R, D, or L. - Esp L.

Libertarian Party buoyant

His nationwide vote count -- the highest count of the minor-party candidates -- represents about 1.2 percent of the total popular presidential vote in the 48 states in which Johnson ran, a UPI analysis of Tuesday's results indicated. Johnson was denied ballot positions in Michigan and Oklahoma.

His vote count also beat the previous Libertarian Party record, set in 1980 by lawyer-politician Ed Clark, of 921,128 votes, or 1 percent of the nationwide total.

Johnson had the strongest showing as a percentage of statewide presidential votes in Alaska, Maine, Montana, New Mexico and Wyoming, the UPI analysis showed. He had the weakest showing in Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York and Tennessee and Wisconsin.

In July of this year, this reporter recalled to Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) that in his first Senate race back in ‘02, he lost to Democratic Sen. Tim Johnson by a much-disputed margin of 524 votes and that Libertarian Kurt Evans drew more than 31,000 votes. Did Evans spoil the race for Republican Thune in favor of Democrat Johnson, I asked?

“No doubt about it,” Thune shot back without hesitation. “He ran to the right of me. I remember when (Evans) came in to tell me he was going to run and I said ‘you know Kurt, it’s going to be a really close race. You could be the difference in this.’ And he said ‘I’ve been called by God to do this’ and I said “I understand. I can’t tell you not to do this. I’m just telling you as a practical matter that in a really close race in this state, that whatever you take away is coming out of our vote total. But he went ahead and did it anyway, so you’re right.”

So Democrats will win you say? Well I'm a fan of Alinsky. Worse is better. OTOH the Republicans could figure out how to attract libertarian votes. Upon further consideration maybe they can't.
