Some books remain relevant no matter how hold they are. Some books move in and out of relevance with changing time as old bad ideas keep rising their ugly heads. If you don't have a copy of "A Step Farther Out," you will not be learning history, you will be repeating it:

You can do anything you want with laws except make Americans obey them. | What I want to do is to look up S. . . . I call him the Schadenfreudean Man.

Re: A step Farther Out
Guys, I hate to tell you this but Pournelle is a former Libertardian who now is a royalist.
I'm not kidding this guy wants a king to run the US.
Really.
The Step Furthur Out looks like the one after the end of the gangplank.
Understand me: Pournelle is a great science fiction writer and I enjoy his stuff. Own a fair bit of it actually and reread it. I can give no higher compliment.
I never ever ever however mistake it for reality.

We need a directorate of science, and we need it to be voted on only by scientists. You don't get to vote on reality. Get over it. Elected officials that deny the findings of the Science Directorate are subject to immediate impeachment for incompetence.
