Using the Google map link in the article, zooming in to the green arrow in the 2nd photo shows what appears to be metallic "planking" and cratering.

I read the comments to these pictures. Many thought some of the patterns may be representations of streets in cities, then started talking about GPS guidence. As some said, GPS would not require such land marks. What I have not seen is the mention of radar mapping . This was used by US cruse missles and is still used by aircraft (and spy satellites?). GPS is better if you can control it and are confident of maintaining it. But radar mapping is a good alternative. A model of a city street geometry would allow for calibration and testing of such radar guidance systems.

The circular pattern looks like a layout for testing a nuclear warhead detonation. The other question is the age of the various structures.

I saw that too.
Some of them looked like test targets for nukes and weaponsystems to me.
The rest, I have no clue.
These "roads" or whatever they are look like they have not been maintained in a long time. The shiny stuff is a bit weirder though.

Circular layouts are normally for effects testing. Somtimes it can be sensor testing. But when you have many artifacts on the pattern, it would be more likely effects.

The other larger polygonal patterns look to be overhead sensor test patterns. I would hazard test patterns for some sort of DSMAC analog for terminal guidance of a weapon system.

It could be something other than a visual or near visual sensor, but given the contrast and layouts, I would think not.

I do not think it is for overhead imagery calibration as the patterns are to complex for what is needed to get the job done. Too much work for the solution. Doesn't make sense.

I like the idea that it is a road system, as DSMAC likes that sort of thing. I would think that someone would recognize the features of an Urban or Metro area in that context eventually.

I suspect the first picture, which strongly resembles a Voronoi diagram, might be something electrical, like an antenna. Odd shape to compensate for the local geomagnetic field? Not DSMAC-related. I once saw a complicated microwave waveguide network for a comsat which had a similar, irregular appearance. Apparently it was shaped to match the topography and intended radiation pattern on the ground. But something this big would be for very low freqs. Submarine comms like Sanguine? About 1 mile per side, full wave antenna, ~186 kHz.

There is also an 18-mile long rectangular grid array in another location which looks like it has power supply lines and delay loops (if the cables follow the vehicle tracks), suggesting a big phased array. Another square array resembles HAARP.

Induced lightning strikes by targeted ionization? That might explain the blast craters and blown-up vehicles.

There's also a nuke plant nearby, you can see the hyperboloidal cooling towers.

Done some work here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cutler_Naval_Station in the past.

I don't think that pattern looks like a lower spectrum transmitter.

I any event, if it is for orbital sensor cal, they have some pretty crappy sensors...

I still think it would make a good DSMAC target.

Found this,

Imagine the fun you could have by sneaking in some night and altering the grid lines, just enough to screw up the satellites but not enough to get noticed.

The one in the second picture are single runway airdrome layout.

Yup, What do you do with a billion Chinese? Build stuff... To make US go crazy-paranoid about it :)

Now suppose the real purpose was to get the US to fire up its space based radar to have a closer look?
