Coming to a place near you; Nov 8th, 2011.

Now, why did he have to go and say "YU55 poses no threat of an Earth collision". I mean, don't these people understand basic principles of the Law of Incompetent Determinism?

So if the prediction is end of the world in Dec 12 but this asteroid is visiting in Nov, then what happens over the year?

The article says it will pass around 220,000 miles from us - which sound like it is about a Moon away.

Might this asteroid hit our Moon? Maybe it dislodges the Moon, which then comes crashing down on us.

OMG, a Carbonaceous Chondrite! Carbon, water, nifty other stuff. It is almost like God is saying, "Here, I gift you with all you need. It is here within your reach. Come, slip the surly bonds of Earth and take your rightful place amoung the stars".

It might be back in one hundred years, will we be ready to capture it? Our children and grandchildren deserve the chance.

They also believe an even bigger asteroid has a one-in-a-thousand chance of colliding with earth in 2182.
Oh, snap! Anyone know that this one is?

There is more than just that.
I can give you a better listing after Wednesday. I need to talk to some guys at Lincoln Labs first, and I'll be there Wednesday.

http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/orbits/

shit loads hurtling about out there.

the maths, behind calculation of probability/risk of capture/impact in n-body systems, also horendous - fractal, butterflies-wing effect - have a good link on it somewhere which i've mislaid.

read recently, (some US?) NEO objects project had been granted 'continued funding', or was that 'reduced funding'. i cant recall, anyone?

Just check the Near Earth Objects website:

Lot of options to play with, have fun.

For the lazy people here is a link to a table already ordered for missing distance from today until 2200.

There is a dude at Lincoln that specializes in this. I just want to hit him up again while I am there.
