Tell 'em it is all part of your commitment to the innovative and technology-driven future of your company, and this is merely engaging in outward-looking professional activity that engineers in all progressive companies do to keep themselves sharp and up to date with new tech. They pay you to be an engineer, not a machine, and this is the best way you think you can fulfil that professional role and maximise your long-term contribution to your company's success.
