I hadn't known just how far back research into adult stem cells went, though I suspect the layman writing the article is mixing a bit up. However, not only have adult stem cells been used more often as actual treatments and not just petri dish experiments, but they're easier to make work--embryonic cells are still foreign, and major treatments will probably need immunosuppressant drugs.
