Experimental rates OK'd for plug-in vehicles

Post by Aero »

The experimental rates approved Thursday will give San Diego-area Leaf drivers a discount when they charge at night.
How big a discount will depend on which of three rates they end up with. Some people will pay 13 cents a kilowatt-hour to charge at night, and 27 cents in the daytime. Others will pay 7 cents at night and 38 cents in the daytime.

With a battery capable of holding 24 kilowatt-hours of electricity, that means that it will cost $1.44 to $9 to fully charge the battery and drive 100 miles, depending on the rate and when the battery is charged.

By comparison, it costs $10 to fuel a 30 mpg car for a 100-mile drive at $3 a gallon.
Were we expecting to save money on transportation costs with electric vehicles? I seem to remember thinking that I might but this is the same cost. Hmm - And didn't they say something about 325 mpg equivalent? Dollar to dollar equivalent doesn't seem quite the same.

Note that electrics pay no road taxes. Yet.
Engineering is the art of making what you want from what you can get at a profit.
