Were we expecting to save money on transportation costs with electric vehicles? I seem to remember thinking that I might but this is the same cost. Hmm - And didn't they say something about 325 mpg equivalent? Dollar to dollar equivalent doesn't seem quite the same.The experimental rates approved Thursday will give San Diego-area Leaf drivers a discount when they charge at night.
How big a discount will depend on which of three rates they end up with. Some people will pay 13 cents a kilowatt-hour to charge at night, and 27 cents in the daytime. Others will pay 7 cents at night and 38 cents in the daytime.
With a battery capable of holding 24 kilowatt-hours of electricity, that means that it will cost $1.44 to $9 to fully charge the battery and drive 100 miles, depending on the rate and when the battery is charged.
By comparison, it costs $10 to fuel a 30 mpg car for a 100-mile drive at $3 a gallon.
