You have to have an IR source though. The sensor in a camcorder is capable of seeing short wave IR. To get a heat vision, you have to use a different sensor, that can see the long wave.

Almost any security video camera outfit will also sell infrared illuminators.

I have a kit for one out in the garage that I never got around to putting together.

Most security camers will see in the IR, even the color models, and they are frequently exquisitely sensitive. I have it loaned out right now to our Neighborhood Watch, but I have a "game camera", a motion-sensitive camera used by hunters to monitor game trail activity. These typically are IR-capable and have a built-in illuminator. I should play around with this thing. It might spot weapons ... or other things ... under clothing.
