and each and every oz of gold and leaf of currency was due to the war, not the drug. If the drugs were legal and available thru the pharmaci, such waste wouldn't occur.

I totally agree. Decriminalization of drugs would not be all plain-sailing, but in the balance, it would be a great benefit to society. Its not just the money the drug lords make, its the greasing of the system, corruption of officials, police officers and government officials.

Portugal's experience is that legalization generally reduces use rates. i.e. prohibition makes EVERYTHING worse. More users + more crime.
