It looks like, at first glance that the Birchers want the the things that we, as Americans should want

You are misconstruing their mindset. It's not that they are afraid of Liberty, it's that they are completely unaware that it is needed, and that their desires will damage it. To them, the damage to liberty is nothing more than an unintended consequence. Collateral damage, if you will.
They simply want to make others (the producers) Do their bidding. The idea that this will infringe the liberty of these others, simply doesn't occur to them.

I agree. The progressives tend to be both child-like as well as of average intelligence. By virtue of this, they tend to bubble with all kinds of wonderful ideas that they feel should be implemented at all costs because, after all, they are such wonderful ideas and how could anyone disagree with them.

I don't think they are actively hostile towards freedom itself. They just want to get their ideas implemented and if a few toes get stepped on in the process, well, the wonderfulness of their ideas justified the toe stepping.

They do not see the disease in themselves that they excoriate others for: the desire for power and control.

i.e. they are down on corporate monopolies and don't see that a government monopoly is worse. It is the belief that their system is so wonderful that the desire for power and control will not manifest.

Worse yet, they fail to see how government regulations are welcomed by oligarch corporations because they create significant financial barriers to entry against others from entering a regulated market, thus limiting competition. By limiting competition, they secure for the corporations the financial power with which the corporation needs to buy and control politicians. Thus the progressive is the unwitting shock troops for the corporatist mercantilist oligarchy they claim to despise.
