To be honest, a good bit of orbital work these days could be done by monkees. The talent we fly is way overkill in most cases now.

Yes if they ever did start building manhattan island sized multi-gigawatt SPS in GEO stationary orbit(or something like that) who would do the work of assembley etc? Most likely 25yr old rigger types not 40yr old PHD/Master types. Type of person who can do hard but fairly dull work day after day for months, welding soddering moving parts into position etc.

Basically, the brightest of those that do the same work well in a gravity well now.
