Dio has many times documented the horrific results of the free access to Opium in China. If you weren't around for that you'd want to take some heed. The weight of the data is overwhelming. You need to be pretty clueless to deny this.

Narcotics are restricted the way they are because. . .well. . . they're narcotics!

If you're too clueless to understand what that means you should not be involved in any discussions of drug decriminalization, etc.

Such clusters are known in Brazil as cracolandias or "cracklands," and dozens have proliferated in big cities such as Rio and Sao Paulo in recent years. Brazil borders the world's top three cocaine-producing countries and has become a huge market for narcotics as its economy expands.

They are offered drug treatment, although many refuse and quickly go back to using.

Unlike adults, minors are sometimes held for treatment against their will - a practice that has stirred controversy. Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes said last year he would support forced treatment of adults as well.

Diogenes trots out his meaningless historical outlier again, which has been replicated nowhere in history, even if it was just what he claims.

It has been tried no where else in history because the nature of it's murderous carnage is obvious to anyone with even a little sense. It is a sole example for a very good reason. It was an unmitigated disaster, never before or since matched in human history.

In the real world, where what he claims for China has most likely never happened there and certainly nowhere else, we know what happens when Americans have unlimited access to drugs provided by the free market--not darn much; our own history proves Prohibition is all cost and no benefit.

And here is the childish notion that Prohibition of Alcohol is exactly the same as Prohibition of hellishly dangerous substances. You might as well compare squirt guns to rifles.

I might actually buy that argument (because it is so obviously the case nowadays) except for all the other examples which demonstrate that what he said is true.

This did not only happen in China.
The legal drug trade was global during the 1800s. What caused the China focus was business. As countries realized that the drugs were a cancer on society they were outlawed and trade moved elsewhere. China has the distinction of being the last great "free market". Mostly because in the final days those businesses selling there did not accept Chinese law and government as being "in charge". The result was a Chinese Revolution, that the businesses decided to call a "Rebellion". It was a long time in the making, and well deserved in my opinion.

The entire history of the drug trade is a good study in why legalization and free market is a really bad idea. This is what gets ignored by the pro-drug crowd. Ask them what they know of the the 1800's global drug trade. Mostly you will get blank looks.

It is the best commodity ever for a big business. Self growing demand. It markets itself.

I'm getting worried about legal drugs just as much as illegal ones these days. Was watching "The Manchurian Candidate" and every commercial break was replete with ads describing new and obscure medical problems and symptoms, ending with a parade of side effects from the cure they're selling. Pushing an entire country multiprescribed to all these pills can't be good.
