Borders on theft? Civil forfeiture, if not of contraband or as penalty for a duly convicted crime, is Theft. The burden of proof needs to be on the government.

Insane!

I do recall a case a decade or two back where a yacht was siezed because they found a single marajuana seed on it, probably from a guest who had attended a party earlier. This is not new.

First it was cash or any other valubles you had on your person if you were stopped searched by the police for being "suspicious". Then the car you were driving in...and then by a natural progression your house/condo/hotel and anything else. After all whose to say you didn't acquire them by some illgotten means? Better safe than sorry, and if the gov. profits from the seizure well no price is to high to stop those chests of opium/drugs etc that surely would happen otherwise. Wonder what will be next? How about figuring out someway to seize your stocks/401K etc?

I get the impression that any drug users from say Vancouver or Amsterdam could be in for a real shock if they ever got busted in the US. That is if they've got something worth confiscating, or they can be made to work off heavy fines. Here they practically have more rights than non users.
