The Drugs and Accident Risk in Fatally-Injured Drivers survey concluded that marijuana has a “negative risk factor” for fatal highway accidents. A “negative risk factor” means that pot smokers have a lower accident rate than teetotalers. It is a scientifically verified fact that marijuana users are safer drivers than sober drivers.

“It was of some interest that cannabis tended to show a negative effect on relative risk when other drug groups showed an increase. This phenomenon has also been seen elsewhere [Terhune et al, 1992; Williams et al, 1985].
It just goes to show you how irresponsible alcohol users are. They should give the stuff up. For the good of us all. Barring that they should be imprisoned, all their property confiscated, and their lives ruined with a criminal record. Society needs to be protected from their kind.

According to a new study, states like California that have legalized the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes have seen a decline in fatal traffic accidents since these laws were passed. The study which aimed to determine the effects of legalization of medical marijuana, found that this decline in traffic accident deaths after the laws were passed, was closely linked to a reduction in the number of alcohol-related car crashes.
The study considered data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration from 13 states which legalized medical marijuana between 1990 and 2009. During this period of time, the researchers found that fatal car accident rates dropped by 9% in those states that had legalized the use of medical marijuana, and that this decline was linked directly to a drop in the practice of drunk driving. Persons living in states that had legalized medical marijuana were less likely to drive under the influence of alcohol, and more likely to use marijuana instead.
When the researchers compared data of accidents before and after medical marijuana was legalized in these states, they found that the rate of accidents involving alcohol use dropped by approximately 12% after the legalization, and accidents involving high use of alcohol dropped by about 14%. Moreover, men- typically more likely to register as medical marijuana users - were less likely to be involved in fatal car accidents than women after the medical marijuana laws were passed. According to the researchers, the drop in fatal car accidents after the legalization of medical marijuana is comparable to the decline seen after the minimum drinking age was increased to 21 years.
