The French are a bit over the top with that indeed. The entire rest of the world calls a computer a computer, but they have to call it l'ordinateur...One reason for the success of the English language is, people who use it are entirely willing to adopt words from other languages. They have language police in Quebec to prevent English corruption of French, even China is beginning to crack down on the English infiltration of Mandarin.
I dont know about the Chinese, but the Japanese are quite readily adopting foreign words. Tomato is pretty much the same word in Japanese, e.g.
German speaking nations also seem to be quite willing to adopt anglicisms. Sometimes to the point of it not even making sense. E.g. a "cell phone" is called a "handy" here. "Handy" derived from the English word "handy". Yet, from what I know, no native English speakers call it that. I find that somewhat bizarre.
