Snowden saga is stark proof of NSA's Prism's blackmail power. Even Putin bows to its threat. The world is certainly shrinking from the political blackmail the NSA has acquired. Further, even though the NSA cover is blown, all, all governments are drooling over the control of citizens, rebels, and corporations. Skynet looks like a cool, benign breeze compared to the "Animal Farm" these guys are corraling us into.

Anybody that thinks this data cloud won't be / isn't being effectively used as the foundation of Obama (or substitute steering committee) to form a behind the scene clandestine super organization by blackmail and influence is a Dorthy in Oz. Snowden has found there is nowhere to run, what are your chances of living your life without bowing to the local commissars?

With all the information coming out how the FBI has run the terrorists they've arrested, how the CIA created and ran Al-Quaeda uninterrupted from it's inception, and given that the cold war has been over since the Berlin wall came down, the question has to be asked, why do we need surveillance at all? If NSA, PRISM and ECHELON were scapped tomorrow would it make even the slightest difference to security.

Actually, the "behind the scene clandestine super organization" was formed about 6000 years ago, probably in Mesopotamia, when the temple priests figured out how to use astronomical cycles to impress and control farmers ("Pay no attention to that man behind the gnomon... Now, watch as the Sun darkens...").

The technology has evolved somewhat over the millenia, but it's the same old game of power and control.

DeltaV, LOL, thanks for the perspective. It could be worse, we could be living in Pompeii at the wrong time. End of the Holocene will be interesting. Hopefully somebody's fusion machine will bail us out. Fracking won't be enough.

The mass data collection the NSA is reported to be doing seems effective in identifying leaders in mass movements, http://kieranhealy.org/blog/archives/20 ... ul-revere/. Once such individuals are identified they can be targeted for more focused scrutiny to tell if the groups they influence are a threat and how they might be removed, crippling the movement. Finding isolated individuals and small groups who represent a criminal or terrorist threat appears to be harder.

I expect not all the rumors of government offices running criminal groups are accurate. It is known that the CIA supported groups in Afghanistan against the soviet occupation. It is reported that Al qaeda is not one of those groups.

I very much doubt it's been one group in domination for 6000 years. More like several groups in a contest for control, learning from each other's successes and failures, refining their methods over the millennia, each group unlikely to last more that a few generations before a successor upsets them. Groups in the contest for power may be difficult to distinguish by virtue of their methods or even ideology. But like the Communists and National Socialists in pre WW2 Germany, they have a strong self identity.
