Hello everyone...I'm new to the board. Just thought I'd get your opinions on the '08 Z-Pinch conference. Here is the link to download the abstracts:

Very interesting reading, but what I found most interesting is the number of projects funded by the DOE right now. I sure like what the Chileans are up to.

The Chileans have been working with the Focus Fusion folks for a while (quoting focus fusion website):
At present, the Chilean Nuclear Energy Commission (CCHEN) is funding a joint project with Lawrenceville Plasma Physics to carry out a three-year series of experiments aimed at testing the scientific feasibility of focus fusion. The Chilean government funding of this project is budgeted at $800,000.

Dr. Leopoldo Soto, the director of the Chilean Thermonuclear Plasma Laboratory, which will carry out the experiment, says "As a fusion researcher, I am excited by the possibility in this CCHEN-LPP collaboration of obtaining high thermonuclear yield from the dense plasma focus using hydrogen-boron fuel. " This work will be an important contribution to the understanding of the complex physics of dense pinches and should test the scientific feasibility of hydrogen-boron fusion.

I saw that quote on the Focus Fusion site John, but the one thing that frustrated me was not getting any progress reports on the research. From the conference abstracts they (CCHEN) published, it seems they have been busy making focus fusion devices that range from >100kJ to <0.1J. None can output net power, but the possibilities are interesting.

actually, I would be quite interested in a complete round-up of what fusion is up to - amongst others i'm wondering what is happening with our Australian friends - Dr. Joe Khachan - viewtopic.php?t=509.

i'm also wondering if our dear friend viewtopic.php?t=337 will be attending the z-conference? (you heard it here first ;)
