Over on Next Big Future there is an article featuring a new design for a fusion- fission hybrid reactor:

I am not quite sure what advantages something like this would have over fission only designs that also breed their own fuel.

Can you fuel it with a food proccessor?

Hmm, at 25 meters in length it would be very representative, but it would also mean that it does not fit into a Delorian, I am affraid

But with that sort of power, you may be able to set up a space time distortion field, mount it "in" a Delorean, and in effect have something like a Sports Car Tardis with a Kitchen Aid on the boot lid.
Nice screen grab, although I always thought Lea Thompson was a better fit.

Fission produces lots of neutrons. Why not use them to breed Tritium or catalyze fusion reactions rather than just letting them go to waste? Think of a fusion-fission hybrid plant as the power plant analog of a two-stage thermonuclear bomb.

i'm curious how the doctor managed to afford a mr. fusion after such a short time of being there. inflation would have made his money worthless by then, and i don't think that 40 year gap in his resume would go over to well with prospective employers. so you have to wonder how many newspapers he had to deliver to afford that.

You go back in time a hundred years, set up a savings account, and go forward a hundred, and viola, lots of money. Something like that I'm sure.

oh but that's not nearly so entertaining to picture.
"...and that brings me to one last thing: i noticed that there's a 40 year gap in your resume. could you elaborate on that?"
"oh, that's easy, you see a built a time travel machine into my car and i used it to travel 40 years into the future."
"umm... yeah... thank you for taking the time to speak with us. we'll get back to you after we've reviewed all of the candidates."

Or more simply, he skips ahead, reads the lottery numbers or sports results...skips back, and viola. Buy a little gold or platinum, put it in a box in a hole...
I think the harder issue is how to handle his taxes...

Maybe you haven't been paying attention to how it is done at the top ...
... with your billions gathered from going back and forward in time and prescient share trading (warren buffet-like), you 'donate' campaign contributions to a special politician and get an obscure tax loop-hole written into a massive 2,000 page tome of law on regulating national parks, saving the wild, woolly-lipped beavers or some such and the lawyers do the rest ....

Not my area of expertise by any means. But sounds like the way it is done.
I like it.
Now, if I can just find some sort of spotted plaid turtle that someone else hasn't already found and codified...
