This is normal human behavior. Truths that we all agree on create no contention, become the status quo, and thus idealistic types who really suffer from oppositional defiance disorder, ennui with status quo, who seek a cause for change will tend to find convincing lies, untruths that contain a lot of "truthiness" as Colbert says, to rally behind. Hence christianity, islam, communism, big government, evangelism, scientology, democracy, anti-nukers, environmentalism, and esp global warming.
