Sounds like you could use a USB drive with something like http://www.pendrivelinux.com/multiboot- ... rom-linux/ and a good linux distro installed on it, for when you have to use a computer of uncertain safety. There are also linux distros specifically assembled to inspect and rescue infected or damaged windoze systems.
yes, that would be a good way to go but I am on vacation and my normal bag of tricks is setting at home. so back to old school. I should have this system up to speed by noon time

Williatw,

Larry Niven would not go so far as to suppose that dwarves will inherit the cosmos, but he addresses pretty much this idea with the peculiar planet of Jinx:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jinx_(Known_Space)

Jinx could be said to be a rocky super-earth, although with a peculiar distorted shape resulting from having solidified under considerable tidal stress. The human colonists bred to be short, stocky, and super-strong to deal with the high gravity.

I'm an old elf-hiver. Uh, I mean L-5er. I think we'll make our own habitats whereever we locate habital zones, and living on planets is a prejudice of planet dwellers who have not thought through the whole logic of space colonization. We'll build O'Neill colonies wherever the resources suggest, and we'll stay out of planetary gravity wells as much as possible.

As for me not posting much, I kind of got out of the habit while the campaign was going on because the politics were getting to be a bit hard to take. I quit FaceBook for the same reason. I can't talk about what I learned on my last trip out there a couple of months ago, except to say that they're still in business and still intent on doing real science, quietly and responsibly.

In my favorite scifi series "Perry Rhodan" there are several races (some of them descendents of human colonists) on higher gravity planets that are very simillar to this description.
