Gas fired combined cycle units are the current trend due to installed capital cost and ability to obtain permitting. Further, it would be a real kick in the head to be half way through finance, permit, design, build cycle for a nuclear facility and have polywell suddenly proven.
Solar is so dependent on local conditions, energy storage, etc, etc, etc. What a nightmare for electric utility providers due to "well meaning" idiot interventionists.

That being said, there are SOME situations where it might be economical. If the utility regulatory boards would pretty much allow ToD pricing across the board, then it would become more economical where peak summer prices are driven by air-conditioning needs. That would compete with off-peak coolth storage (run your AC at night to freeze a phase change material and then dump daytime heat into it for daytime comfort control).
