:D

Darn, I love this stuff. Much better than mis-placed radioactive boy scout references.

The C-39 reminds me that I just found my sample disc of Bicron BC-720 a few months ago. Same principle ... use a chunk of transparent and highly hydrogen-rich plastic to get proton recoil from fast neutrons. But rather than looking for microscopic tracks, BC-720 is doped to make a flash detectable to a PMT.

I don't think amateur fusioneers have been using it much, though, as they have had trouble getting enough sensitivity. The track method is cumulative, so where the count rate is down in the noise, a longer run can produce a more solid result when the material is a reliable dosimeter.

I do have one safety issue ... the picture of them standing around watching a drilling operation with no safety eyewear. NEVER, EVER do this if somebody is standing around with a camera, ready to post the evidence on the internet!

I would like to get something like this going at Rattlesnake Ridge Research, although I'm at least a year out from having the facility ready.

Making a PMT dance without a lot of noise is a trick in itself. I'm a believer in lots of flat black paint myself.
