more specifics of what they are proposing
http://www.inspi.ufl.edu/global2009/program/abstracts/9156.pdf A fusion-assisted transmutation system for the destruction of transuranic nuclear waste is developed by combining a subcritical fusion–fission hybrid assembly uniquely equipped to burn the worst thermal nonfissile transuranic isotopes wi...

University of Texas, Compact Tokomak Fusion Fission Hybrid
http://nextbigfuture.com/2009/01/university-of-texas-at-austin-proposes.html New Device, Super X Divertor, Can Enable Compact Nuclear Fusion Tokomaks to Burn 99% of Uranium, Plutonium in Nuclear Waste. The super X divertor reduces the flux heat and neutrons by about 3-4 times. Thus current materials...

Rapid maintenance and sufficient reliability
Thanks M Simon for the reliability analysis. I knew that was key but did not take the time to quantify it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mean_time_between_failure MTBF is Mean Time Between Failures, which is described at the wikipedia link. The reliability of the pistons is a key aspect. Although hav...

How General Fusion is planning to make the timing work
Because of the high accuracy of the impact timing of the numerous pistons (~1 μs), an electric means of controlling the exact piston trajectory is required. But this system can control only a few % of the piston energy. In particular, it can be a braking only system not requiring any high electrica...

My article reviewing the info at General Fusion site
the breakthrough alert was to my article general fusion update The company has done some physical proof of concept tests with modest amounts of fusions. It was at 1/25th speed. 4 meters/second instead of 100 meters/second They have their own venture capital funding. I am interested to see if they ca...
Hyperion is real and makes sense
I write nextbigfuture.com. 1. Obviously those who believed that Hyperion Power Generation is a scam are wrong, since the company has been in discussions with the NRC and has been making presentations at respectable conferences. Then the issue is not if they are real but can they deliver and when wou...
