Re: SpaceX News
FYI... It is not super chilled kerosene or a mixture until it is mixed in the engine combustion chamber (with a small caviet). The fuel is a modified kerosene (distilled to a more consistent mixture of hydrocarbones called JP1 fuel) and this is near room temperature. The seperate oxygen is superchil...

Re: Is this a dumbed down version of the tri-alpha concept?
I'm also unsure about the economic scalability. It depends on the cost and operating costs combined. The maintenance and retirement costs, etc. Wind farms can occupy large areas of land, but the land is useful for other purposes below the windmills. The maintenance and operating costs are probably mi...

Re: SpaceX News
The ZUMA mission goals and fate are clouded, to say the least. I think it can safly be said that the SpaceX contribution was nominal, based on the lack of flight interruption of the Falcon 9 launches- two since the ZUMA mission. What happened on the Northrup - Grumman side is hidden behind a wall of...

Re: SpaceX News
Comments about the benefits of the space program or Mars is based on little understanding. To compliment that level I will point out that Mars has plenty of water, the key is warming it up. That in itself is an extensive problem. After that other things fall into place- though the time it takes depe...

Re: SpaceX News
It has been reported that SpaceX cannibalized some parts from the West coast barge to repair the fire damaged East coast barge. This may be the primary reason why they are not trying to recover this next launch (12/22) from the West coast. Even if the intact booster could not be used again, parts mi...

Re: New Fuel Mix for higher Plasma Temperatures
This is a brief article and the significance may be uncertain. There is some interesting information though. The proportion of deuterium seems to be quite high and I wonder if this is typical for D-T Tokamaks. The research may have been more to do with the behavior of fusion products and their contr...

What EMC 2 patent? The original is well over 20 years old and a newer application (in 2008?) was rejected.

Re: Polywell ;Take two?
This bit of fluff is underwhelming. Another source https://www.nasa.gov/directorates/spacetech/niac/2017_Phase_I_Phase_II/Continuous_Electrode_Inertial_Electrostatic_Confinement_Fusion perhaps clarifies that this is merely an engineering study to determine that if an IEC device can magically achieve...

Re: X-Ray Reflection and Absorption
X-ray energy recovery or reflection is difficult (other than as heat). Two considerations. The first is the heavy metal U238 tamper or shell of some boosted atomic bombs and early hydrogen bombs. This helps to trap X-ray energy so that the plasma stays hotter longer so that significant fusion of D-T...

Re: Lockheed Martin news
5 milliseconds or more may be very significant, or not. For a Polywell operating at a density of 10^22 /M^3 it is impressive. But, I don't know at what density the Tri Alpha current efforts are working at. It is that old triple product consideration. Low Beta Tokamaks may manage 100s of seconds, but...

Re: Fission news(I know blasphemy )
Having a removable tank would help cleanup on site( probably by a large amount .But if it weighs 400 tons, it could not be transported intact, except perhaps by barge. Also, clean up of the actual radioactive slug is not just fragmentation of the sludge and sweeping. It is doing so by robotics. Ever...

Re: Fission news(I know blasphemy )
Seems highly unlikely since any leakage would either freeze on the leak, plugging it, or drip to the floor where it would freeze and be easily chipped and swept then hit with the nuclear equivalent of a Stanley Steemer. Yes and no... Even fuel rods my end up as solid chunks, I've been talking about...

Re: Fission news(I know blasphemy )
When you have Molten Salt Reactor, you can have a continuous fission product removal system too. You almost need one to get to true breeding level with a Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor (LFTR). With such a FP removal system, they don't build up and they don't present a problem. But even if you leav...
