All of the MPD thrusters use very small quantities of gas, accelerated to very high velocities to give us that wonderful thrust.... But we can make them bigger. VASMIR looks great, because you short the SC control magnets and they no longer need much energy, and you simply power the antennae to expa...

The design is simple enough. How reactive is the hydrogen after a pass through a VASIMR? Providing we keep the hydrogen in a usable form, bypassing air from a compressor or ram scoop directly into the hot hydrogen gas/plasma stream coming out of the thruster should make for one nice self-lighting ca...

So burn the hydrogen as you expel it. Have you guys ever seen the catalyzed hydrogen peroxide rockets? One of the byproducts was oxygen (and water) They created a second stage in the engine by injecting kerosene into the O2 rich exhaust. We could use the hydrogen in a similar manner. Probably mixed ...

I was looking at the AR50 and the M82... go cheap, or go all out. Something tells me my divorce lawyer and tuition will wind up eating my big gun budget for this year. I still send more rounds downrange with either my marlin bolt, or my model 60 .22 than with any other weapon I own. The ammo c...

If the data was in any way correct, AGW wouldn't be a scandal, and Jones and others wouldn't be fearing criminal prosecution. Can we thicken the atmosphere? Yep! Not very much.. But, if the sun heated the planet to the point the methane "snow" that rests on the ocean floor turned into a gas and ente...

I carry either the XD45 Tac., or the PPk, depending upon what I'm wearing. The G3 I built, and the Keltec PLR-16 is my new competition gun, and CQB hotrod. I just got sick of lugging the H&K doing clearance in tight scenarios. I'm close to having enough guns... I need to finish the Saiga 12 build I'...

I have a couple 7.62x51 H&K types, a few sidearms, a few plinkers. Here are some of my regular shooters/carry... http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=30785726l=7e07d35a0e&id=1139580974 I am in the process of starting life MkII as soon as my divorce is final and my degree is finished. I'm curious. Anyone else a fan of loud noises and kinetic energy?
(Yes, I'm talking about guns.)
Other topics I'm useful on... Cars, Aircraft, Cooking, Wine...
I compete in ACTS and Action Pistol myself, but I'm looking at building a very long range rifle. .338L, .408CT, or even just a .50BMG.

I'm also curious how well we can shield the coils from the heat of the reactor. Niobium-tin (Nb3Sn) has to be kept a bit on the chilly side... but it can produce 13.5T fields. So, we crank up the B field, and increase the size a little less? Can we simply encase the coils in a thin, mirrored, vacuum...

I appreciate your point. But don't overlook the simple fact that the craft must escape Earth at least one time. Escaping with the use of an air breathing propulsion system seems impractical unless the craft is going to stick around Earth. Of course collecting atmospheric gasses and using them stric...

I'm not being a jerk, really. For that craft, to operate in any lunar or Martian environment would mean it required far less reaction mass. Even if you feel like landing on Venus, Mars, or jumping in and out of gas giants... big gravity wells mean you have gas to use as delta-V. You never need to pu...
