Re: Fission
Some among this board believe that fission is not worth its cause. This is not true. Most issues of fission reactors has been dealt with, and so-called problems already have a solution. Well, discuss. It's fine with me if people want to discuss that here — this is sort of the place for off-topic di...

Re: Where do the electrons come from?
Dr. Bussard has said that a polywell reactor (using a collector grid) will appear as a giant battery to the outside world. By this I assume he means that it generates a steady DC current. So, the electrons come from the rest of the circuit, i.e. whatever this giant battery is plugged into. If it wer...

Not bad, although I think the cube may be misleading. Won't it be a dodecahedron be the final reactor form? Not necessarily; I've heard rumors that they're going to try a dodecahedron to see if it performs enough better than the truncated cube to be worth the extra complexity, but this is by no mea...

Re: Logo competition!
That's a reasonable idea. I was working on a logo just this morning, using POV-Ray to ray-trace some rings, and then my plan is to paste in a sort of starburst thing I have from another source.
It's not ready yet, but when it is, I'll post it here.

I have been chewing through two documents:- John Santarius (Uni of Wisconsin, 2002) "A brief overview of inertial-electrostatic confinement fusion" R. W. Bussard (EMC2, 2006) "The advent of clean nuclear fusion" I don't know that second one. Where is it available? I am unable to obtain papers these...

http://www.petitiononline.com/fusionxp/petition.html Which currently stands at 41 Total Signatures. Thanks, I hadn't seen that. However, I think it's important to hash out the rules and conditions for such a prize carefully. The X Prize folks did a great job with the suborbital flights, but who kno...

Prize competition?
Nanos mentioned prizes in the Foresight thread. I thought that was interesting, but deserving of its own thread. The X Prize certainly worked in fostering commercial suborbital flight. Of course it took a while, and required several benefactors — most notably Anousheh Ansari, to fund the prize, and ...

Moore foundation
The Moore foundation looks like a good one. They don't accept grant proposals, though; instead they apparently want to make first contact themselves. So, how can we make sure they understand the opportunity the EMC2 FDC presents? I see that they're looking for a program assistant for the science pro...

Charitable Organizations
There are some large charitable organizations that fund research — usually medical research, but surely there are some with a wider view of what's important. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is one well-known such organization, though they seem to specialize mostly in health issues. (Though they ...

I just want us to be fully realistic that there isn't likely to be a magic person we can speak to and make it all happen overnight, as much as I'd like such a person to exist. We need to plant many seeds, and nurture them as well as we can. There's no predicting which one will grow into the metapho...

Whilst I'm all for hoping that we can reach people and get someone to fund things, at the end of the day, I fear any funding will be down to each of us digging into our own pockets to move things forward in anything approaching our own lifetimes. I've already contributed $50 to EMC2, and I certainl...

Union of Concerned Scientists?
For those who don't know, the http://www.ucsusa.org/ is an organization consisting mostly of practicing scientists, who have in common a concern for the environment and a desire for rational solutions to environmental problems (plus a few other issues like scientific integrity). They testify before ...

I do not mean to insult you, but ask yourself: do you honestly think that someone that is opposed to fission will change his mind regarding fusion? Yes, of course I do, because I am such a person, and I've read many others (e.g., I read Science magazine on a weekly basis, where that is a fairly com...

Since the consensus seems to be that it's not worth doing, I guess I'll do it myself, because I disagree with that consensus. I was just wondering if anyone would like to help craft the letter or has a better contact method than just mailing it to him. I'm not sure any consensus has been reached — ...
