"Beyond this, however, there was no significant difference in a general health index, which was the designed outcome measure."

Which is not the same as saying it is a reasonable measure, just what they were trying to measure.

"For example, large medically unexplained variations in Medicare spending across hospital regions [100, 101] were recently used to estimate the regional mortality benefit from spending $1000 more in the last six months of life. The benefit is bounded (at the 95% c.l.) to be less than 0.1% in general, and less than 1% for a subpopulation with certain specific conditions (such as heart attack) [89]."

Which is taking no note of the fact the ages at which the spending is taking place are later and later ages.

"An optimistic accounting of the benefits of specific treatments attributes only five years of the forty or more years of added lifespan over the last two centuries to medicine [17]."

Why look at specific treatments instead of the entirety of the healthcare apparatus? Why is their measure the appropriate measure?

"And even if this overall risk-index effect were real, it would represent about fifty days of life gained for the average patient, paid for by roughly 30% more medical spending over a lifetime."

Many people deal with their mortality when it is the more directly in front of them, and having those fifty days is worthwhile to most; also they are having those fifty days at later and later ages, which is important.

As an counterexample I see every work day, let's talk about Jack (name changed). Jack has arthritis, and he wouldn't be doing the job he was doing if it weren't for his medical care, he wouldn't be able to type. It is all part and parcel of the whole. In fact, he had heart trouble about 8 years ago, and he wouldn't even be here to have arthritis if it weren't for medical care.

What Hanson is saying is that it is inappropriate, to go by the general case, for Jack to have had the medical care he had (treatment for heart attack) because in the general case he only got an extra 50 days. Unfortunately for Hanson and his ideas, no one is the general case.

Also, the health care research establishment is what will develop into life-extension...

http://pajamasmedia.com/instapundit/?s=life+extension

...that technology will also proceed incrementally. Because it advances at the margins, and the margins will always be the expensive bits, we should forego the prolongation of healthful, useful life?

We only get there by the spending at the margins. We should keep spending on the margins.

More evidence of what i've been saying all along.

Davis also queried more than 200 journalists to learn how they use blog content in their coverage of political news. Most journalists were aware of influential blogs on both sides of the political spectrum, such as Daily Kos and Talking Points on the left and Michelle Malkin and Instapundit on the right. Despite equal awareness, journalists spend more time reading posts in the liberal blogosphere.

Even in the last two decades of the 20th century, new medicines accounted for 40% of the increase in life expectancy in more than 50 countries, according to a recent study by Columbia University economist Frank Lichtenberg. In other words, for every year that life expectancy has increased, five months can be attributed to the availability of new medicines.
To re-iterate, Dr. Robin Hanson quite is incorrect.

More evidence that Media people are nothing but Liberal Democrats who attempt to steer public opinion.

Maureen Dowd caught stealing material from Left-Wing Blog.

This makes twice in the span of four days that a major newspaper’s been caught cribbing material from nutroots blogs, which stands to reason. According to a survey of more than 200 journalists recently conducted at BYU, “despite equal awareness [of lefty and righty blogs], journalists spend more time reading posts in the liberal blogosphere.” Contain your surprise.

For example, more journalists know about Michelle Malkin than Talking Points. Yet twice as many journalists actually read Talking Points than read Michelle Malkin.

“When journalists take story ideas from blogs, those ideas naturally will come from blogs they read,” Davis said. “These reading patterns suggest journalists may be getting primarily one view of the blogosphere.”

Well, he wasn't alone. Gawker has learned that the White House gave tickets to virtually every major news organization that covers the president—the New York Times, Washington Post, Newsweek, Time, ABC News, NBC News, CNN, CBS News, and so on, about 30 in all. The reporters were invited to attend on the following condition:

"You are being invited to attend this event as a guest. Blogging, Twittering or otherwise reporting on this event is not permitted. If you feel that you cannot agree to abide by these ground rules, please don't claim a ticket."

The guy that Wrote the Vanity Fair Hit piece (Todd Purdum) on Sarah Palin is married to Dee Dee Myers. (Former Clinton White House Staff.)

The media is completely inbred with Democrats. This is just an example of a family and friends party.

Sorry, but thats not so evident. Hanson clearly stated that vaccination was one of the exceptions that, combined with public sanitation and nutrition, are responsible for almost all extension in lifespan. Last time I checked, vaccines are considered a 'medicine'. What you need to do to disprove Hanson is to break down which medicines are responsible for that alleged five months, and take out the vaccines, which Hanson acknowledges, and see whats left. I suspect you will find that minus vaccines, all other medicines contribute about a month to a month and a half to average life expectancy.

How about another game of GUESS THE PARTY.

The rules are simple. If a Republican does something, the party's affiliation is noted in major headlines in every story which covers it, but if a Democrat does something, no mention of party affiliation is ever made. (That's because 90% of journalists are Liberal Democrats. ) Here's the latest example.

Remember all those people arrested recently in New Jersey ?

There is a new way of fixing medical costs. Stop treating chronic pain.

War On People In Pain

Lack of treatment doubles the suicide rate. Not enough. But it is a start.

Drugs are not just about extending life. They are also about improving quality.

After all, does Viagra extend life?

Another example of why it is SO dangerous to have Liberals exclusively controlling what the American Public is allowed to see.
What they did in this last election the TRIED to do in the previous one.

Another example of how the media manipulates elections by the way they report the news.

Norman Hsu Should be a household name
Jack Abramoff. Remember him? The former Republican lobbyist who was sentenced to five years for unlawful campaign fundraising and influence peddling crimes. The elite media had him on the TV and front pages for months. The New York Times published 235 stories on Jack Abramoff and of course it was a page 1 story from the beginning.
So here we have Norman Hsu, ….well lets have Associated Press tell the story:http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090929/ap_ ... fundraiser

Image

Hmm…. so why hasn’t anyone heard of this guy? I went on Google and what did I discover? Well a 50 million dollar scandal at the highest levels of government should be big page 1 news right? After all, Abramoff only got got five years in prison and Hsu got 24. Oh I almost forgot, these are Democrats so thats ‘different’. The New York Times published all of 19 stories on Norman Hsu, none of which indicate that they were on page 1.

NBC’s Historian Goodwin Campaigns for Democratic Senate Candidate

Image
Before the Democratic primary vote on Tuesday in Massachusetts to replace the late Senator Ted Kennedy, a chance to catch up with how just before Thanksgiving, historian Doris Kearns Goodwin — a Bay State resident and a favorite of NBC News where she regularly pops up to deliver conventional liberal wisdom in the guise of historic insights — crossed into partisan politics to campaign for one of the four liberal candidates.

Another example of the inbred relationship between Democrats and the Media. They are literally relatives. They marry each other, they have each others children.

Rahm Emanuel once said of Peter R. Orszag, the bespectacled economist who is President Obama’s budget director, “He’s made nerdy sexy.” So perhaps the White House chief of staff won’t be surprised to learn that Mr. Orszag got engaged over lunch on Monday to the ABC News correspondent he began dating six months ago, Bianna Golodryga.

Democrats woo MSNBC host Ed Schultz for Senate

Why would the Democrat want an unbiased neutral media employee ? It's a mystery!
North Dakota Democrats are actively pursuing liberal MSNBC talk show host Ed Schultz as a candidate to replace Sen. Byron Dorgan, who announced Tuesday he would not seek reelection.

State House Minority Leader Merle Boucher told POLITICO he made an official overture to Schultz late Tuesday night about launching a campaign and said he believes the TV commentator is "intrigued by the idea."

That may very well be, but that is the point where we say its not constitutional for the government to take my money to pay for your health care. We have a right to life, we dont have a right to health.
