Sometimes I sleep. Sorry.

I check in about 2 or 3 times a day most days. Sometimes only once. Some times 8 or 10.

If you have my e-mail (on the side bar at Power and Control) that is a good way to give me a heads up. Or do a post in a thread I have posted on. I can erase OT posts if you ask in the post.

You can also write to me at joe@strout.net.

There are three moderators now, and between the three of us, you should never see spam lasting more than a day -- usually much less. I delete (and ban the email of) about two dozen spammers per day.

Joe - maybe it is time (now that we have a good core group) to have vetted registrations.

I think there may be bots that create random memberships everywhere they can...

Yep those pesky robots.

I propose a question to gain registration

ELECTRONS in a copper conductor travel at a speed of ?

a. The speed of light 3x10^8 metres per second
b. 2/3 the speed of light
c. Centimeters per hour

That should weed them out ... the answer being c :)

Weeded me out.

Simpler but still tricky.

Sorry, I missed this spammer. I generally look in twice a day, but if you drop me a PM I'll get it much quicker.

Regards,
Tony Barry

I've thought about that. But if the spammers are clever, they'll actually do better with that — they'll submit a nice plain initial account, with no web URLs or garbage in their sig, then wait to be approved, and then edit their account with all their spam links. Whereas in the current system, they put that garbage in right away, and when I check the member list every day or two, it's easy to go through and delete them.

Of course, if spammers were smart, they'd do the same thing under the current system, filing a nice plain account at first, waiting a week, and then posting their crap. Fortunately for us, spammers don't appear to be very smart.

So maybe an approval registration system is a good idea after all. I'll certainly think about it — and if we try it and it doesn't work, we can always change it back.
