Short Film on Carl's Fusor

Carl has built a fusor in his basement, in Washington state. It can:

1. Run at room temperatures.

2. Do ~1E6 fusions per second.

3. Fuse atoms for hours.

Now this is really interesting. The fact that he is not heating the inner grids is huge. I would love to see more info on his geometry.

Carl is great. Teaching kids how science can be awesome, showing the community that not all neutrons are scary, and generally building real cool things in the basement. Go Carl Go!

I assume this is a Farnsworth-Hirsch fusor variant. How are the grids arranged to produce such a linear plasma configuration? Does the geometry cause the neutrons to also be emitted linearly along the beam, or are they still pretty much fired everywhere? If production is linear, this would make this a really neat neutron source... Since the grid is not heating up, despite continuous operation, how is this being cooled?

Carl is using really nice tungsten cathodes. He has photos. It is a very basic design, not a cage.


When I saw this I jumped out of my chair.
