Why Neither Party Attracts Libertarians

Commenter Neil has a few words (I know him personally - 'net friend) to say. He is a techie (EE).

Here is my short version:
Neil says: Libertarians don’t have an effect. For 80% of of them, “I’m a libertarian” actually translates to “I can’t stand Democrat policies, but for cultural reasons I can’t vote Republican.” They will not affect the vote.
Exactly right. Very well put. I call the “cultural” stuff – moral socialism.

Let me add here that the defect is similar to that of the left - way to high an estimation of government power. Plus only looking at the good side of that power and down playing or ignoring the bad effects. In addition the unseen is not even contemplated. i.e. the invisible losses are not even considered. Loss of tax revenue say. Or labor market distortions. Or losses from avoiding government. Or the costs of policing. And the really biggie - black markets.
