Here is how it usually works:
The good guys build up the state for good and moral purposes. Then the bad guys get elected and use the power for evil purposes.
This is common in history.
There is only one solution to minimize the problem - keep the government of the state small.
Unfortunately in America we are cursed with two Big Government parties. Each wailing when the other side gets in and uses the power developed by the previous occupants against them. It is funny to watch.
Of course a change in direction in this matter will require a people who are not in love with the power of the state. We have quite a ways to go on that one. The recent election of Rand Paul is a harbinger of a change in attitude among some. I'm mildly encouraged.
