One interesting fact I learned from a guy at futurepundit.com is that 50% of miles driven in the US are by cars less then 6 years old. Another factor to consider is that if everyone had a plug in hybrid with a 40 mile all electric range, over 70% of our oil use for driving would go away.
I believe by 2020 that almost all of the cars sold will be plug-ins of some kind. And I don't believe people are going to settle for smaller vehicles, they will go for maybe even larger vehicles, with high acceleration.

It is also interesting to note that General Motors is trying to leapfrog the whole Hybrid thing with the ultimate electric platform; They aren't betting entirely on any specific type battery; Their technology will be a great advance regardless of the electric sources both on board, and original generating techniques.
