Here are some interesting articles on the history of the U.S. Fusion Program:

How the Malthusians Crushed The U.S. Fusion Program by Megan Beets in EIR Science, 14 pages, 14th May 2014

This one is a slightly shorter version of the previous article with another title:
Who Stole Fire from Mankind - The Suppression of Fusion by Megan Beets, in 21st Century Science & Technology, 12 pages, 15th of May 2014

The True History of The U.S. Fusion Program - And Who Tried To Kill It by Marsha Freeman in 21st Century Science & Technology, 13th April 2010

crowberry,

That Marsha Freeman article is good.

She was a serious fusion supporter/journalist in the 80's. She was interviewed last year.

She was supported by Lyndon LaRouche's magazine/foundation (Eric Lerner also worked there).

Might I also suggest: Fusion's $372-Million Mothball by William Booth. Science [New York City] 9 Oct. 1987, Volume 238 ed.: 152-55. Print.

Thanks mattman for the video link! Fusion research would still need a lot of promoting.

Thanks for the link to this paper as well. The closing of MFTR and the mirror fusion research was quite incredible.

What happened to American courage?

-- Teddy Roosevelt pushed the Panama canal which was a radical project at the time -- one at which the French already failed.

-- The Manhattan Project as an incredible leap of faith. American built whole cities and spent many billions (1n 1940 dollars) taking the chance isotopes could be extracted, and that they would be useful. No one was sure the bomb would even work until it was tried.

-- The moon landing.

And fusion's potential payoff is greater than all those things -- and less speculative.

Possibly America's loss of courage can be traced to the moment the partly-built Superconducting Supercollider (which would have been more powerful in the 1990s than LHC today) was canceled. Before that was Reagan's canceling of the (completely-built!) Magnet Fusion Test Facility before it even was turned on.
